UNCOMMON VIEW-MASTER CAMERAS & EQUIPMENT ETC

Personal Camera, Silvertop Version

Most of the View-Master Personal cameras are all black, while a few are light tan and brown (and usually MUCH more expensive). This one however is different again as the bottom 3/4 is black but the top 1/4 is plain metal with a very smooth finish.

This uncommon type is called a “Slivertop” by colectors and I’m told by a very well respected View-Master expert that originally all of the silver top cameras went to factory employees. I guess this was so they could be distinguished from the commercially available versions that could be brought in the shops and so dissuade employees from selling them on at full price. This one came with an original 1950s invoice from UK Customs showing that the owner had to pay £25 import duty, and that was on a camera which was valued at just £20!

Adaptor for 35mm Slide Projector

This Uncommon or dare I say it, rare item is not an official Sawyers product, but was made in the early 1970s by Gnome, UK manufacturers of slide projectors and enlargers. The two halves bolt together and a small film holder for 110 slides is inserted in the gap between the two. The entire assembly now simply slips over the lens of your slide projector. As an added bonus if the slide carrier is removed, the supplied View-Master film chip sized mask is inserted and the small retaining pin at the rear is screwed in, single cells from a View-Master reel can be projected. Unfortunately there is a large spring which is designed to add a little pressure to the reel to give it some resistance when rotating it to the next image, but this seems to be cunningly designed to scratch the reel when inserted or removed. According to the instructions this is suitable for use with all Gnome projectors (and there were lots of those around in the 1960s and 1970s) but I have never seen this item before until my one turned up a few years ago at a local camera show.  An unusual (and useful) accessory.

VIEW-MASTER Badges

  1. VIEW-MASTER 'Shelf Talker' It is belived that this 2-sided plastic sign was issued to place on dealer's counters.
  2. VIEW-MASTER 3D Club - Metal Badge c1980. Issued as above, but seen much less often.
  3. VIEW-MASTER Dealers (?) Badge.
    Cast metal, size 2" long.
I was told that these badges were given to View-Master dealers by their Sawyers’ sales reps to show customers that they were View-Master "specialists". This badge, along with another example that came with it, are the only two I have ever seen.
VIEW-MASTER 3D Club - Cloth Badge (not illustrated) c1980. This badge was issued in the UK and only obtainable by joining the View-Master club. Although intended for kids, several adult UK collectors I know joined just so they could add the badges to their collections!
