True-View, Empire Made

Now here is a great example of how to piggy-back on (some might say 'rip-off') the names and reputations of other companies. Although there really was a True-View 3D system made here in the UK by S.E.L. and based on the US Tru-Vue, this is a poor attempt to copy it. The viewer is very cheaply made and you insert a 3D card by pulling out the side mounted tray. As the viewer that has been copied was originally designed for film strips not cards, it is dark inside when a card is inserted and difficult to see the image. This is further compounded by the use of very poor quality lenses.

Needless to say, even though the cards bear an adapted version of the View-Master logo, see image above, neither they nor the viewer are a Sawyer's product. The cards measure 90mm x 30mm and are actual black & white photographs of  contemporary View-Master films chips, mostly dioramas.  The viewer is marked Empire Made which as it looks to date from the 1950s probably means made in Hong Kong and the box proudly bears the name of the Happy Plastic Co. Any further details would be welcomed.

View-Master Reference Books

There must have been more written about View Master than any other 3D product.
Here is a selection of books for the collector.

Collectible View-Master, an Illustrated Reference and Value Guide
by Brad & Julie Welsh is the most recent price guide, published in 2000. It gives an in-depth guide to reels and the different styles as well as 3-reel packets, viewers and equipment, along with an up to date guide to each items value. If you are after as much information as possible as to the different reel variations and further minutia, then this is the book for you

Stereo Views, an Illustrated History and Price Guide
by John Waldsmith covers just about every type of stereo image you are likely to come across. Although concentrating mainly on early stereo cards, the book features a valuable section on 'modern' items including View-Master. Complete with an extensive listing of single reels and 3-reel packs.

Now re-printed and updated, image shows old edition, this is a 'must have' for your bookshelf.

View-Master Memories by Mary Ann & Wolfgang Sell, with C Van Pelt. Over 300 pages of fascinating View-Master facts and a full history (and trivia) from probably the world’s leading View-Master collectors, plus a large dose of contributions from a former Sawyers employee.

Packed full with behind-the-scenes stories this book gives an unrivalled insight into the whole View-Master story and make you realise just how big a product it was in its’ day (how about sales of well over £6.5 million in 1953!!!!). Until you have read this book, you can only ever know a small part of the View-Master story.

Now out of print, but there is talk of it being available on CD.
